[3] Grégoire Marche 3-1 Nathan Lake (ENG) 9-11, 11-7, 11-7, 11-9 (62m)
Gregoire Marche is through to his first semi-final at a Silver event since 2019 after coming from behind to down Nathan Lake.
Marche, whose last appearance in a Silver semi-final came on home soil at the Open de France over six years ago, fought back from 1-0 down to see off Lake 3-1.
“I know Nathan [Lake], I have known him for more than 15 years now and we have played a lot in the past,” he said.
“I don’t like to play him as he is very smart on court and he puts the ball away all the time. He is a lefty so it is different, so on the left side he was very accurate and even on the right.
“I just had to find some sort of solution, it’s the first tournament after almost two months for me. I took a break in December and I just wanted to be ready for January so I didn’t know how to react physically. I have worked hard but you know I can’t spend as much time on court as I used to.
“I didn’t know how my body was going to react and yesterday was a tough match as well, and Nathan played two good matches in the first two rounds so I knew I had to be ready for Nathan. I’m glad I got through it in the end.”
Marche will face the men’s top seed Paul Coll following the World No.2’s 3-0 success over Bernat Jaume.
Second Tour
[1] Paul Coll (NZL) 3-0 Melvil Scianimanico 11-7, 11-4, 11-5 (39m)
Nathan Lake (ENG) 3-0 [5] Auguste Dussourd 11-4, 12-10, 11-6 (33m)
[3] Gregoire Marche 3-1 Toufik Mekhalfi 11-9, 11-9, 8-11, 11-6 (61m)
Premier Tour
Melvil Scianimanico 3-1 Omar Said (EGY) 7-11, 11-5, 11-3, 11-2 (35m)
Toufik Mekhalfi 3-2 Rui Soares (POR) 11-6, 9-11, 11-1, 7-11, 11-7 (55m)
Toufik Mekhalfi, who claimed the biggest win of his career so far last week in the first round of the Rich Venus Karachi Open Gold-level event, was 2-1 up before Soares forced a deciding fifth game. Mekhalfi eased to an 8-2 lead before Soares powered back and was within three points of levelling and sending the fifth into a tiebreak at 7-10 down; however, Mekhalfi was able to keep Soares at bay to prevail 11-6, 9-11, 11-1, 7-11, 11-7.
“This is technically a first-ever Silver first round win – today it was tough. It was difficult conditions and I’m really happy with that,” Mekhalfi said.
“It was a cheeky match because it was not my best match because the conditions were not easy. If you are not hitting the ball well, the ball was going into the middle of the court and it was difficult to find my length. It got better at points but not during all the match.”
