Countback drama as France upset Pakistan to break Brazil’s hearts
In a dramatic conclusion to the Group Stage of the men’s event, France scored a 2-1 win over Pakistan to pip Brazil to second place in Group F on countback and clinch a spot in the knockout stage of the 2025 World Squash Junior Championships.
24 hours ago, No.9 seeds France’s hopes for the championship looked to be in tatters after a shock defeat to No.17 seeds Brazil. Today, though, they found big performances when they needed them most as they defeated No.6 seeds and five-time champions Pakistan 2-1.
European U19 individual champion Amir Khaled-Jousselin gave France a deserved lead when he took the opening match against Abdullah Nawaz 3-0, before Muhammad Umair Arif hit back for Pakistan with a straight-games win over Axel Daujon.
It looked like France would fall just short when Anas Ali Shah took the first game of the deciding match for Pakistan, only for a heroic rearguard from Thomas Garcia to deliver a crucial victory for France as he fought back 11-6, 13-11, 11-4.
That result, coupled with Brazil’s 2-1 win over Kuwait, meant that Brazil, France and Pakistan all ended the Group Stage with two ties won and one tie lost. This meant that every point earned would prove crucial as the final standings were decided on countback of total matches won, with Pakistan topping the group with seven matches won, France finishing second with six, and Brazil falling short of a top 12 finish for just the second time with four matches won, putting them third.

Tournament No.9 seeds France fell to an unlikely defeat to No.17 seeds Brazil as the 2025 World Squash Junior Team Championships got underway at Black Ball Sporting Club, Cairo.
The World Squash Junior Championships bring together the world’s best squash talents aged under 19, with the men’s and women’s individual championships having taken place from July 21-26 and the men’s and women’s team championships being contested between July 27 -01 August.
Today’s ties saw teams look to make the best possible start to their Group Stage campaigns, with everything to play for in the hunt for a favourable second round draw.
Both Brazil and France were called into action twice today in men’s Group F, with France defeating Kuwait 3-0 in the morning while Brazil lost to Pakistan by the same scoreline.
The No.17 seeds shook off that defeat in spectacular fashion, though, to leave the group wide open.
With today’s string order 3-1-2, it was Owen Hendricks who was up first, and the third string delivered when his country needed him most as he fought back from two games down to defeat French counterpart Axel Diet 3-2.
France quickly restored parity via Amir Khaled-Jousselin, with the first string taking out Bernardo Dias 11-2, 11-1, 11-2 to make the third match between Owen Hendricks’ brother Viggo Hendricks and Axel Daujon a decider.
To the ecstatic cheers of the Brazil bench, it was Hendricks who came out on top in an intense battle, with the 17-year-old clinching an epic opening game 19-17 and then powering on 11-7, 11-6 to win it for Brazil.
