Quarts de finale
[2] Diego Elias (PER) 2-1 [5] Victor Crouin 8-11, 11-4, 13-11 (43m)
[3] Joel Makin (WAL) 2-1 Baptiste Masotti 11-7, 6-11, 11-6 (41m)
World champion Diego Elias saved five match balls to secure a place in the semi finals of the Grasshopper Cup 2025, Gold-level event, at the expense of Victor Crouin at Zurich Hauptbahnhof.
French No.1 Crouin, seeking his first win over the World No.3 on the PSA Squash Tour, looked to be on course to breaking that winless run when he had five match balls.
Crouin dominated the ‘T’ for large parts of the match, and took the ball early on a number of occasions to give him the luxury of five opportunities to convert in the third game. But Elias roared back to save all five of the Frenchman’s match ball chances, as the Peruvian clinched a semi-final place with a 8-11, 11-4, 13-11 victory.
Second Tour
Baptiste Masotti 2-0 [8] Abdulla Mohd Al-Tamimi (QAT) 11-9, 12-10 (23m)
[5] Victor Crouin 2-0 Alex Lau (HKG) 11-6, 11-3 (20m)
[2] Diego Elias (PER) 2-0 Auguste Dussourd 11-7, 11-5 (23m)
The Frenchman, who has never lost to the Qatari on the PSA Squash Tour, extended that run to three matches.
Masotti had to dig deep in round one yesterday to overcome Curtis Malik, but it was the Frenchman who was better suited to the fast paced nature of the first game.
The World No.22 used the front of the court better, as he edged the first 11-9, and Masotti was finding the back corners well in the second to have a handful of match balls.
All three match balls chances were squandered, but Masotti converted in the tiebreak 12-10 to confirm his quarter-final place.
“It’s very tough – I hate the best of three, to be fair! The pressure we have is so different to the best of five,” he said.
“I’m glad I won this match and I hope I’m going to play better tomorrow as I did everything I could to win.
“I can play way better. I think what happened to me in Zurich after many years I had my best result and I had my good friend with me. I’m very happy.”
