Hana Moataz – Grace Gear
On s’attendait à un duel serré entre deux joueuses au classement assez proche, mais Hana Moataz (n°41) a été très incisive du début à la fin. En grande forme ces dernières semaines, Grace Gear (n°47) n’a pas réussi à contrer la vitesse de la jeune Egyptienne et s’incline en 3 jeux.
« Effectivement, on peut dire que j’ai beaucoup mieux joué qu’hier (rires), c’était le premier tour et j’ai eu un peu de mal à me mettre dedans. Je savais que Grace avait eu de très bons résultats récemment, j’ai donc abordé ce match avec méfiance. Le court central est très différent de celui sur lequel j’ai joué hier, mais il convient beaucoup mieux à mon jeu ! Je m’attends à une gros match contre Lucy, la dernière fois qu’on s’est joués c’était au ToC en janvier, j’étais menée 2-0 et j’avais gagné en 5 jeux … »
Lucy Turmel – Enora Villard
Pendant deux manches, la Française Énora Villard (n°50) a fait jeu égal avec Lucy Turmel (n°30), prenant des initiatives offensives avec une certaine réussite. Mais elle n’a pas réussi à tenir la cadence, et l’Anglaise a largement dominé le reste du match pour composer son ticket pour le dernier carré.
« Je n’ai pas vraiment changé de tactique après le 2ème jeu, je me suis juste relâchée et je suis revenue aux fondamentaux. Dans la 2ème partie du match, je l’ai fait beaucoup courir et elle était fatiguée à la fin, alors que de mon côté j’étais plus précise. C’est vrai que j’ai joué un tournoi la semaine dernière en Afrique du Sud mais je ne suis pas fatiguée, c’est plutôt le contraire car c’est mieux d’enchaîner les matches. »
Emily Whitlock – Millie Tomlinson
Après une entrée en matière un peu compliquée hier, la tête de série n°1 Emily Whitlock (n°22) a sérieusement haussé son niveau de jeu contre Millie Tomlinson (n°54). Après deux premiers jeux quasi-parfaits, la Galloise a connu un gros trou d’air en début de 3ème, avant de resserrer les boulons et de remonter de 1-8 à 11-9.
« Le début du 3ème jeu, ce n’est pas vraiment une saute de concentration, c’est plutôt que la balle avait refroidi, ça a mis un peu de temps avant de la réchauffer et que les échanges puissent à nouveau s’allonger.
Cela étant dit, attention Millie est une bonne joueuse et gagner 3-0 contre elle est un excellent résultat. Effectivement je n’ai pas beaucoup joué de 20 000 $ ces derniers temps, parce que depuis le covid le circuit s’est résumé principalement aux gros tournois ! C’est super que nous ayons à nouveau plusieurs options.
Être tête de série n°1 ? Ça ne change rien pour moi, c’est juste une liste de 24 joueuses … »
Georgia Adderley – Mariam Metwally
L’unique affrontement entre Mariam Metwally (n°36) et Georgia Adderley (n°43) avait été un gros combat, mais on a rapidement senti que ce serait différent mercredi soir. L’Écossaise a pris le dessus dès l’entame sur l’Égyptienne, de plus en plus en difficulté sur ses déplacements au fil du match et qui a abandonné en milieu de 3ème jeu.
« Evidemment j’aurais préféré que le match se termine d’une autre façon, mais avant qu’elle n’abandonne je pense que je produisais un bon squash et que je mettais la balle là où il fallait. J’avais perdu en 5 jeux la dernière fois contre Mariam, mais je n’ai pas eu besoin de regarder à nouveau le match car je savais quelles choses je devais corriger. Le tout début de la saison a été un peu difficile pour moi mais depuis quelques tournois je suis contente de mes performances. J’espère que je vais continuer sur cette lancée contre Emily, qui m’avait battue en septembre à Paris. »

We expected a tough battle between two players close in the rankings, but world ranked 41 Hana Moataz came out firing and never slowed down. WR47 Grace Gear had been in great form lately but couldn’t counter the young Egyptian’s pace and lost in 3 games.
“Yes we can say I was definitely sharper than yesterday, it was my first round and I was a bit shaky. I knew Grace had been playing well lately, and I was very cautious. The center court is very different from the one I played on Tuesday, but it actually suits my game a lot better! I am expecting a big match against Lucy, last time we played it was at the Toc in January I was 2-0 down and I won in 5 …”
Lucy Turmel – Enora Villard
During two games, Frenchwoman Énora Villard, WR50, matched WR30 Lucy Turmel and was rewarded for her risk-taking at the front of the court. Unluckily for her she wasn’t able to sustain this level, and the English dominated the rest of the match to book her ticket for the semis.
“I don’t think I changed much tactically after the 2nd game, I relaxed and went back to basics. I made her do most of the work and she was getting tired towards the end, and in the last game I really found my targets.
It’s true that I played a tournament last week in South Africa but I don’t feel tired, it’s actually a good thing because it makes you more match sharp.”
Emily Whitlock – Millie Tomlinson
Her first round was not easy on Tuesday, but 1 seed and WR22 Emily Whitlock stepped into another gear against WR54 Millie Tomlinson. After two faultless games, the Welshwoman had a dip at the beginning of the 3rd but she made an impressive comeback from 1-8 to 11-9.
“It wasn’t really a dip in concentration at the beginning of the 3rd, the ball went cold and it took a bit of time to warm it up and get the rallies going again. But don’t get me wrong, Millie is a good player and beating her 3-0 is a very good result. About me playing a 20k, it’s just that since covid it’s been all about big events! It’s great that players have options again. As far as being top seed goes, it doesn’t change anything, it’s just a list of 24 players …”
Georgia Adderley – Mariam Metwally
The sole encounter between WR36 Mariam Metwally and WR43 Georgia Adderley was a tough battle, but we quickly felt the story would be different on Wednesday night. The Scottish girl took the upper hand from the start on the Egyptian, whose movement seemed more and more hindered as the match went on and she decided to retire in the middle of the 3rd game.
“Obviously it’s not a nice way to finish a match like this, but I feel like before she retired I was playing well and putting the ball in the right areas. I’d lost to Mariam in 5 last time we played, but I didn’t watch the match again, I knew what I did wrong and what I had to change. The beginning of the season was a bit tough for me, but I am happy with the way I’ve been playing in the last few events. I hope I can carry this momentum against Emily, who beat me in Paris in September.”
